“Turning Back the Shadows: Trusting God for Miracles in Impossible Circumstances”

In 2 Kings 20:1-11 ESV, we encounter a pivotal moment in the life of King Hezekiah. This passage highlights deep truths about the power of prayer, the importance of faithfulness, and God’s ability to extend life and offer miraculous signs. Let’s unpack the key points and their relevance to contemporary Believers.

 1. The Power of Prayer (Verses 1-5)

1 In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die; you shall not recover.'” 2 Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, saying, 3 “Now, O LORD, please remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4 And before Isaiah had gone out of the middle court, the word of the LORD came to him: 5 “Turn back, and say to Hezekiah the leader of my people, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD, – 2 Kings 20:1-5 ESV

In the beginning of the passage, Hezekiah is gravely ill, and the prophet Isaiah delivers a message from God: “Set your house in order, for you shall die; you shall not recover” (v. 1). Faced with what seems an impossible situation, Hezekiah turns to God in desperate prayer. He weeps and reminds God of his faithfulness and wholehearted devotion, saying, “Now, O Lord, please remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart” (v. 3).

  • Prayer is a response to impossibility: Hezekiah’s illness seemed final, but his response was to pray. For the contemporary Believer, prayer remains a powerful response when facing impossible situations. Hezekiah’s example reminds us that even when all seems lost, we can turn to God and pour out our hearts.
  • God hears and responds to prayer: In verse 5, God tells Isaiah to return to Hezekiah and say, “I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you.” This shows that God is attentive to the cries of His people. Even in our darkest moments, God listens, cares, and can change our situation.

 2. The Importance of Faithfulness to God (Verse 3)

3 “Now, O LORD, please remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. – 2 Kings 20:3 ESV

Hezekiah’s prayer highlights his faithfulness to God throughout his life. He emphasizes that he has walked “with a whole heart,” meaning that his devotion to God was genuine and consistent. This faithfulness played a role in his appeal for God’s intervention.

  • Faithfulness builds relationships: Hezekiah’s faithfulness allowed him to confidently approach God. When we walk in faithfulness, we cultivate a relationship with God that gives us access to His presence in times of need.
  • God honours faithfulness: Although God is merciful and will listen to us regardless, Hezekiah’s faithful walk with God gave him a strong foundation to stand on in prayer. Believers today are encouraged to remain steadfast in their devotion, trusting that God will honour their commitment to Him.

 3. God is Not Finished with You Yet (Verses 5-7)

5 “Turn back, and say to Hezekiah the leader of my people, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD, 6 and I will add fifteen years to your life. I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city for my own sake and for my servant David’s sake.” 7 And Isaiah said, “Bring a cake of figs. And let them take and lay it on the boil, that he may recover.” – 2 Kings 20:5-7 ESV

Despite the initial prophecy that Hezekiah would die, God graciously extends his life by 15 more years (v. 6). This miraculous healing came not only with an extended life but also with a promise of deliverance from the Assyrians. God was not finished with Hezekiah’s purpose yet, and He made that clear by adding years to his life and continuing to use him for His glory.

  • God has a plan beyond our understanding: Even when it seems like we are at the end, God may still have much more for us to do. For those who are struggling with hopelessness or facing what seems like an insurmountable problem, this passage is a reminder that God may not be finished with us yet. He can and will make a way for His purposes to be fulfilled.
  • Our lives are for God’s glory: Hezekiah’s healing was not only about extending his life but also about God fulfilling His greater plan for the nation. Our deliverance often serves a higher purpose—bringing glory to God and fulfilling His plans.

 4. The Sign of the Shadow (Verses 8-11)

8 And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up to the house of the LORD on the third day?” 9 And Isaiah said, “This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he has promised: shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or go back ten steps?” 10 And Hezekiah answered, “It is an easy thing for the shadow to lengthen ten steps. Rather let the shadow go back ten steps.” 11 And Isaiah the prophet called to the LORD, and he brought the shadow back ten steps, by which it had gone down on the steps of Ahaz. – 2 Kings 20:8-11 ESV

After receiving the promise of healing, Hezekiah asks for a sign to confirm God’s word. The sign given is extraordinary: the shadow on the steps of Ahaz would go backward ten steps (v. 10). This reversal of the natural order of time is a supernatural sign of God’s power and faithfulness to fulfil His word.

In the natural world, shadows move forward as the sun progresses across the sky. The shadow moving backward 10 steps, rather than forward, is a reversal of the natural order of time. This miraculous event signifies that God is not bound by the laws of nature or time. He can alter the course of events, even reversing time itself. It was a visible demonstration of God’s absolute control over creation.

  • God gives confirmation of His promises: Sometimes, God provides visible signs or confirmations to strengthen our faith. Hezekiah’s sign of the shadow is a reminder that God can move in ways beyond human understanding to affirm His promises.
  • God controls time and circumstances: The movement of the shadow emphasizes God’s authority over all creation, including time itself. When facing struggles that seem impossible, we can trust that God is not bound by natural laws or limitations. He can shift circumstances in ways we cannot comprehend.

Encouragement for Those Facing the Impossible:

26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26 ESV

Hezekiah’s story is a powerful reminder that with God, all things are possible. When we face situations that seem irreversible or too difficult, we can trust in the God who controls all things. His ability to heal, extend life, and provide miraculous signs showcases His power and glory.

  • Pray with confidence, knowing that God hears and responds.
  • Remain faithful, trusting that God honours our devotion and walks with us through the hardest moments.
  • Remember that God is not finished with you yet. No matter how hopeless things seem, God can extend life, change circumstances, and bring His purposes to pass.

Ultimately, God’s interventions in our lives bring Him glory. As we see His miraculous hand at work, we are reminded of His greatness, His love for His people, and His power to do the impossible. Let Hezekiah’s story encourage us to persevere in faith, knowing that God can reverse even the darkest of situations and that His plans for us are never thwarted.
