“Living in Three Realms: Earth, Heaven, and the Spirit”

I. THE EARTHLY REALM — LIVING AS EMPOWERED FOLLOWERS OF JESUS

In John 14, Jesus begins by addressing His disciples’ present reality. They are still walking in the earthly realm, where faith is tested, fear is real, and obedience is essential. Jesus calls them to trust Him, follow His example, and continue His mission on earth.

A. Jesus Calls for Present-Moment Trust (14:1–4)

Jesus begins with reassurance for life here and now.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

And you know the way to where I am going.”

Observation

Jesus acknowledges that earthly hearts become troubled. His first command is not do something but believe. The earthly realm is sustained by trust, not performance.

He also anchors present peace to future promise.

B. Jesus Reveals Himself as the Way for Earthly Living (14:5–7)

Thomas expresses earthly confusion; Jesus answers with heavenly clarity.

“Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’

Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’”

Observation

In the earthly realm, Jesus forms our direction (the way), foundation (the truth), and power (the life).

He is not simply the path to heaven — He is the pattern for living.

C. Earthly Disciples Are Called to Continue Jesus’ Works (14:8–14)

Philip asks to see the Father; Jesus answers by pointing to His works — and then theirs.

“Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.’

Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father…

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.’”

Observation

Jesus places His followers firmly in the realm of earthly mission:

  • We are called to display the Father through our actions.
  • We are empowered to do the works Jesus did — and even greater.
  • Earthly life becomes a stage where heaven collaborates through prayer.

This realm is about representation: we reveal the Father as Jesus did.

D. Earthly Love Expressed Through Obedience (14:15)

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Observation

In the earthly realm, love is proven by obedience. This is not forced obedience; it is the natural fruit of relationship.

II. THE HEAVENLY REALM — THE PROMISE OF A PREPARED PLACE

Jesus shifts the disciples’ attention beyond the earthly struggle to the heavenly realm, where the Father is actively preparing a place for His children.

A. Heaven Is a Prepared Place for a Prepared People (14:2–3 revisited)

This promise anchors the soul during earthly trials.

“In my Father’s house are many rooms… I go to prepare a place for you… I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”

Observation

Heaven is relational:

  • The Father prepares it.
  • Jesus promises to return personally.
  • The goal is nearness: “to myself.”

Heaven is not about mansions — it is about presence.

B. Knowing Jesus Means Knowing the Destination (14:7)

“From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Observation

Heaven is certain because relationship with Jesus is certain.

Heaven is not mysterious — it is guaranteed by the One who reveals the Father.

C. Heaven Is the Source of Ultimate Peace (14:27)

As Jesus returns to talk about heaven, He gives a heavenly peace as a foretaste.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.

Not as the world gives do I give to you.

Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

Observation

Heaven’s peace is:

  • Given by Christ
  • Not derived from circumstances
  • A deposit of the world to come

Believers live on earth with the peace of heaven operating in them.

III. THE SPIRITUAL REALM — THE INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The third realm Jesus introduces is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit — a realm that surpasses physical proximity to Jesus.

A. Jesus Promises “Another Helper” (14:16–17)

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth…You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

Observation

Jesus reveals a realm that surpasses His physical presence:

  • The Spirit is another Helper (another of the same kind).
  • He will be with them forever, surpassing the temporary nature of earthly companionship.
  • The Spirit dwells in believers — a new, intimate realm of divine presence.

B. Jesus Will Not Leave Them as Orphans (14:18–21)

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you…

Because I live, you also will live… He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

Observation

Through the Spirit, Jesus continues His presence among His people.

This is the relational realm of continual revelation — Jesus makes Himself known to those who walk with the Spirit.

C. The Spirit Teaches and Reminds (14:25–26)

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,

he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

Observation

The Spirit:

  • Teaches (imparts understanding)
  • Reminds (keeps truth alive)
  • Works in partnership with Jesus’ words

This realm equips believers to live wisely beyond human capacity.

D. The Spiritual Realm Enables Obedience and Love (14:23–24)

“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him,

and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

Observation

This realm is the home of the Trinity within the believer.

Not just visitation — habitation.

Conclusion: The Interwoven Realms

John 14 reveals that Christians do not live in one realm at a time — they live in all three simultaneously:

  • Walking on earth,
  • Anchored in heaven
  • Empowered by the Spirit
