Jeremiah 29:4-14 ESV
4 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. 8 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, 9 for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the LORD. 10 “For thus says the LORD: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.
INTRODUCTION: Years ago, a man by the name of Paul Harvey had a radio spot called, The Rest of The Story. Mr. Harvey would tell a familiar story with information that was previously unknown or glossed over. He would introduce the information to his listeners in a way that most often would change the context or understanding of the story. He closed each segment of his show by saying, “And now you know the rest of the story!”
The scripture text for the day is one that is familiar to most Believers. In fact, it may be one of the most memorized passages because of the positive promise that it contains. However, we know that the fulfillment of the fulness of a promise can only come with complete understanding of the perimeters that have been established by the author of the promise. That would be God Himself!
Let’s dive in to this so that we discover the rest of the story.
1. GOD ALLOWS SEASONS OF CAPTIVITY TO SHAPE OUR FAITH.

“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

2. GOD IS SOVEREIGN OVER SUFFERING AND USES IT FOR GOOD.

Jeremiah 29:7 (ESV)
“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”
Note: God makes it clear that their suffering is not accidental—it is directed by Him for a redemptive purpose. Even in a foreign land, He is fully in control and guiding the outcome.

3. GOD SETS THE TIMETABLE FOR REDEMPTION.
Jeremiah 29:10 (ESV)
“For thus says the LORD: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place.”
Galatians 4:4 (ESV)
“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law.”

4. GOD’S PLANS ARE GOOD EVEN WHEN THE SEASON IS HARD.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

5. GOD CALLS US TO SEEK HIM WITH ALL OUR HEART.

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the LORD, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.”

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
