In a world filled with uncertainty and turmoil, it is essential for us as believers to anchor ourselves in the steadfast truth that God is our stronghold, our source of refreshment, and our ultimate peace speaker. As we delve into Psalm 46 today, let us explore how God fulfills these roles in our lives and how biblical characters have experienced His strength and provision firsthand
God is my Strong Tower.
Psalm 46:1-3 (NASB20)
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.”
Proverbs 18:10 (NASB20):
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.”
The phrase “The name of the Lord is a strong tower” from Proverbs 18:10 means that the identity, character, and reputation of God provide a place of refuge, safety, and protection for those who seek Him.
- El Shaddai: God Almighty – This name emphasizes God’s unlimited power and strength, symbolizing His ability to provide, protect, and sustain His people.
- Yahweh Tsuri: The Lord my Rock – This name portrays God as a solid foundation and refuge, representing His unchanging strength and stability in times of trouble.
- Adonai Tsebaoth: Lord of Hosts – This name signifies God as the Commander of heavenly armies, highlighting His supreme power and authority over all creation.
- El Gibbor: Mighty God – This name emphasizes God’s might and strength beyond human comprehension, showcasing His ability to conquer every obstacle and enemy.
- Yahweh Nissi: The Lord is my Banner – This name symbolizes God as a victorious warrior, leading His people to triumph and displaying His strength and protection over them.
Like a strong tower in ancient times provided defense against enemies and shelter in times of danger, the name of the Lord serves as a secure place for believers to run to in moments of need. It signifies that by invoking God’s name and putting our trust in Him, we can find strength, security, and peace in His unwavering presence and power. Seeking refuge in the name of the Lord implies seeking Him for protection, guidance, and deliverance in all circumstances, knowing that He is a trustworthy and mighty stronghold for those who put their faith in Him.
God is my Fresh Water.
Psalm 46:4-7 (NASB20):
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her [a]when morning dawns. 6 Nations made an uproar, kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice and the earth melted. 7 The Lord of armies is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.
Here, we are reminded of the river that brings joy and vitality to the city of God.
John 4:13-14 (NASB20):
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.”
Just as the Samaritan woman at the well encountered Jesus as the source of living water, we can find spiritual refreshment and sustenance in Him.
John 7:38 (NASB20):
“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
God is my Peace Speaker.
Psalm 46:8-11 (NASB20):
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has inflicted horrific events on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire. 10 “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord of armies is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.
Psalm 46:10 (NASB20) instructs us to “Cease striving and know that I am God.” In the midst of chaos and trials, God invites us to find peace in Him.
“Cease Striving” = Relax and Let Go | “be still and know” KJV | “Step Out of the traffic” MSG
Consider the disciples in the boat with Jesus during the storm where Jesus calmed the winds and waves, demonstrating His power and ability to bring peace in the midst of turmoil.
Mark 4:35-41 (NASB20):
35 On that day, when evening came, He *said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” 36 After dismissing the crowd, they *took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was. And other boats were with Him. 37 Now a great windstorm developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat so that the boat was already filling up. 38 And Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. 40 And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 And they were extremely terrified and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
Verse 39: Literally, “A great calm occurred.”
Conclusion:
As we reflect on the truths of Psalm 46 and the experiences of biblical characters who found strength and provision in God, let us take heart in knowing that He is our strong tower, our source of living water, and our peace speaker. May we lean on Him in times of trouble, draw from His well of eternal life, and find rest in His perfect peace. Let us trust in the faithfulness of our God, who is always present to protect, refresh, and speak peace into our lives. Amen.
