Conquering With Courage | A Journey With Joshua | Week 5

Today, we delve into the story of Joshua and the miraculous battle in Joshua 10. It is a powerful account, demonstrating the consequences of unwise partnerships, the importance of maintaining commitments, the trustworthiness of God even in the face of seemingly absurd requests, and His faithful fulfillment of His promises. Let us open our hearts to receive these timeless lessons from God’s Word.

Joshua 10:1-15 (NASB)

In Joshua 10:1-15, we witness Joshua facing the formidable alliance of five Amorite kings who conspired against the Israelites. Their intent was clear: to destroy God’s chosen people. On the surface, Joshua could have made an inadvisable decision, entering into a compromising partnership to secure his safety or pursue personal gain. Instead, Joshua chose to trust in the Lord and seek His guidance.

The Consequences of Inadvisable Partnerships (Joshua 10:1-5)

Joshua 10:1-5 (NASB)

“Now it came about when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and had utterly destroyed it (just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were within their land, that he feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were strong. Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piram king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, ‘Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the sons of Israel. So the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they with all their armies, and camped by Gibeon and fought against it.‘”

The partnership with Gibeon was ill-advised because it was based on deceit. In Joshua 9, we learn that the Gibeonites had deceived Joshua and the Israelites by disguising themselves as a distant nation in order to avoid being destroyed like the other inhabitants of the land. They presented themselves as ambassadors seeking a treaty with Israel, and without seeking God’s guidance, Joshua and the leaders of Israel made a treaty with them. However, they soon discovered the Gibeonites’ deception.

  • Contrary to God’s commandments:
God had strictly commanded the Israelites to drive out all the inhabitants of the land and not make any treaties or covenants with them (Deuteronomy 7:2-4). By making a treaty with the Gibeonites, Joshua and the Israelites directly disobeyed God’s command. Their alliance with the Gibeonites compromised their obedience to God’s instructions.
  • Relying on human understanding:
Instead of seeking God’s guidance and discernment, Joshua and the Israelites relied on their own limited human understanding. They were swayed by the Gibeonites’ deception and did not consult with God, ultimately making a hasty and unwise decision. This serves as a reminder for us to seek God’s wisdom and guidance in all our partnerships and decisions.
  • Potential military consequences:
The partnership with Gibeon had significant military implications. The surrounding kings, including Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem, saw the alliance as a threat. This led to the formation of a coalition against Israel, with the intention of attacking Gibeon. The Israelites now found themselves in a vulnerable position due to their ill-advised partnership.
  • Spiritual consequences should not be overlooked. The Israelites were to be a holy and distinct people, set apart by God for His purposes. By making a treaty with the Gibeonites, who were part of the Canaanite nations facing judgment, the Israelites compromised their spiritual integrity and risked being influenced by the ungodly practices of the Gibeonites. The partnership with Gibeon was ill-advised because it was based on deceit, disobeyed God’s commandments, relied on human understanding rather than seeking God’s guidance, and had potential military and spiritual consequences. Joshua and the Israelites’ failure to consult with God and discern the truth resulted in hasty decision-making with far-reaching implications. This serves as a reminder for us to seek God’s wisdom, remain obedient to His commands, and walk in discernment when forming partnerships in our own lives.

Maintaining Agreements When Not Personally Profitable (Joshua 10:6-9):

Joshua 10:6-9 (NASB)

“Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, saying, ‘Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites that live in the hill country have assembled against us.’ So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the valiant warriors. The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands; not one of them shall stand before you.’ So Joshua came upon them suddenly by marching all night from Gilgal.”

In Joshua 10:6-9, we witness a critical moment where the Gibeonites, who were now under threat due to their alliance with Israel, send a plea for help to Joshua. Despite any inconvenience or lack of personal productivity, Joshua demonstrates the importance of taking our vows seriously and remaining committed to others.

  • Upholding our commitments:
When the men of Gibeon urgently requested assistance, Joshua did not hesitate to respond. The Israelites had made a treaty with these people, promising to protect them, and Joshua took their vow seriously. He understood the importance of maintaining commitment, even when it inconveniences us. We are called to uphold our vows and promises just as Joshua did.
  • Prioritizing the well-being of others:
Joshua’s immediate response showcases his dedication to the welfare of others. He recognized the need to put aside personal comfort and productivity in order to fulfill their commitment. Joshua’s actions reflect the biblical principle of loving our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). We ought to prioritize the well-being of others and show loyalty in our relationships, even when it seems unproductive or inconvenient for us personally.
  • Trusting in God’s guidance:
God assured Joshua that victory was sure as he marched to assist the Gibeonites. Joshua did not allow his own concerns or uncertainties to deter him from fulfilling his commitment. Instead, he trusted in God’s guidance and promises. Similarly, in our own lives, we should trust that God will provide the strength and wisdom to sustain us in keeping our vows, even when doing so seems challenging or fruitless from a human perspective.
  • Recognizing the significance of unity:
Joshua’s commitment to the Gibeonites demonstrates the importance of unity among God’s people. By standing with the Gibeonites, Joshua fostered a spirit of trust, support, and unity within the community of Israel. As followers of Christ, we are called to be supportive and loyal to one another, recognizing that our commitment to each other strengthens the body of Christ and testifies to our love for God.

Despite the personal cost, Joshua stayed faithful to his commitment to the Gibeonites, even when it seemed disadvantageous. He honored the treaty made with them, exemplifying integrity and loyalty. This serves as a reminder for us to honor our commitments, even when it may not seem personally profitable. Our faithfulness reflects our trust in God’s faithfulness.

The Ridiculous Requests that God Honors (Joshua 10:10-14):

Joshua 10:10-14 (NASB)

“And the Lord confounded them before Israel, and He slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and pursued them by way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. As they fled from Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, the Lord threw large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword. Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, ‘O sun, stand still at Gibeon, and O moon in the valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, Until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. There was no day like that before it or after it, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel.”

In Joshua 10:10-14, we witness Joshua making an audacious prayer request to God. It showcases how God delights in answering seemingly ridiculous prayers when they are made with faith and aligned with His will.

  • God delights in fighting for His people.
The Lord confounded Israel’s enemies, giving them victory over the Amorites. He demonstrated His power and sovereignty in the battle at Gibeon, causing great confusion and fear among the enemy forces. This sets the stage for Joshua’s remarkable prayer. In response to Joshua’s faith-filled prayer, God displayed His extraordinary power. God THREW ROCKS AT THEM!
  • Joshua’s bold prayer
Amidst the battle, Joshua spoke to the Lord, making a ridiculous request for the sun and moon to stand still. It was an audacious and seemingly impossible petition. Yet, Joshua had unwavering faith in God’s power and trusted that He could intervene in unprecedented ways.
  • God’s response
The sun stood still, and the moon halted, enabling the Israelites to win a decisive victory over their enemies. This extraordinary event demonstrated God’s favor, His ability to transcend natural laws, and His willingness to respond to the faith-filled prayers of His people.

In the heat of battle, Joshua boldly prayed and made a seemingly absurd request: for the sun and moon to stand still. Astonishingly, God answered his prayer! This incredible event reminds us that God is not limited by what seems rational or possible to us. When we trust in Him and make bold requests aligned with His will, He can work in unimaginable ways.

Divine Victory Brings Rest (Joshua 10:14-15):

Joshua 10:14-15 (NASB)

“There was no day like that before it or after it, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel. Then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.”

Joshua 10:14-15 highlights the unprecedented nature of the events that unfolded during the battle at Gibeon. It emphasizes the significance of God’s intervention, His faithfulness, and the victorious outcome for Israel.

  • A unique day of God’s response:
The passage begins by stating, “There was no day like that before it or after it.” This highlights the extraordinary nature of the day when the sun stood still in response to Joshua’s prayer. It emphasizes that God’s intervention and response to Joshua’s faith-filled prayer were unparalleled in history. Despite the audacity and seeming improbability of Joshua’s request, God heard his plea and answered him.
  • Joshua’s return to Gilgal:
After the miraculous victory, Joshua and all of Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal. They reveled in the glory of God and his mighty power. God proved once again that He is the ultimate source of victory and He could continue to be trusted.
