(Psalm 102:13 NIV) 13 You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come.
There’s an old song that most of us recognize. The lyrics are…
Anticipation, anticipation
Is makin’ me late
Is keepin’ me waitin’
-Carly Simon
Waiting is not my strong suit. Being patient is something I desire, but it often escapes me. Only by the grace of God am I able to control impulses that could cause me to miss out on blessings that only come through waiting.
Today’s passage of Scripture is described as “A prayer of one afflicted, when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the Lord.” The Psalmist writes 12 verses identifying his difficulties before making a statement that struck a chord with me. He rehearses the promise of God to “Rise and have compassion.” He reassures himself by declaring the time for waiting is over. “It is time to show favor!” “The appointed time has come!”
Oh glorious day! There have been several days like this in my life and I can confirm there is no greater joy than to experience an expected, and oft-prayed for breakthrough. Whether it is a financial blessing, a relationship restored, a prodigal child that returns home, a loved one who breaks the chains of addiction, etc. (Fill in the blank!)
The emotion that accompanies anticipation is freeing. It brings confidence and faith. It generates excitement.
Not long ago, I ordered an item online and had it shipped to my home address. When making payment for the item, I selected the cheapest shipping rate available knowing that it would take a bit longer to arrive. When the order was processed, I received a notification informing me that I could track the progress of my order via an app on my phone. I selected the option to have the tracking reports sent to my email. I received emails when it left the warehouse, when it was placed on the truck, when it arrived in Atlanta, when it was put on the plane to Louisville, and when it arrived at the airport here. I was notified when it was put on the truck and was told the day and the approximate time of the delivery. It was a small, insignificant item, but I found myself getting absolutely giddy. The anticipation was almost as enjoyable as receiving the package.
To some degree, this is what the Psalmist is saying. He knows, whether by revelation or spiritual discernment, he was entering a time of favor and blessing. And with that knowledge came peace.
What are you expecting from the Lord? Hold on my friend, for the time of favor is upon you. I declare it over myself, and over you in Jesus name!
PRAYER: Lord, I face the challenges of the day knowing they cannot last forever. Soon, deliverance will come; for today is the appointed time for favor to arise. I receive it and I thank You for it! Amen.
