God Will Take Care of You!

(Genesis 13:8-9 ESV) 8 Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.

I have to admit that selfish people tend to be a growing segment of society! While I do believe there is a time and a place to stand up for ones rights, I also believe that we must learn how to trust God to stand up for us.

At 75 years of age, Abram’s life was turned upside down by a divine invitation that would begin a new season of trust; God told him to leave everything familiar and start a journey that would continue for the rest of his natural life. It was made abundantly clear that God’s provision would be more than sufficient. Abram need only trust Him completely.

In our Scripture today, Abram and Lot were having a problem dwelling together because of the size of their assets. Both men were so greatly blessed the land was unable to sustain them. It’s important to note that God had made a covenant with Abram, NOT Lot, which meant God would bless Abram regardless of the outcome of this arrangement.

How easy it would have been for Abram to take this opportunity to remind Lot that he would need to have the first choice of the land. Instead, he remained faithful to his commitment to follow the leading of the Lord on this exciting journey of faith.

We live in a society that tends to be selfishly motivated. We want what we feel entitled to. Whether it is a parking space, an added benefit at work, the better office space, the easier shift–we often want what seems most beneficial to our own advancement.

The child of God should be operating by a different standard. We are to prefer our brother over ourselves. We are to live to encourage and edify others, putting them ahead of our own wants and desires. While that seems unnatural, it is spiritual.

Lot chose what looked best. He took what was seemingly the easier path to a more fruitful life. But, what he did not count on was the sinfulness of the people he chose to live among. What he selfishly selected for personal gain, became the conduit leading to total depravity and loss.

On the other hand, God took Abram to the perimeter of what seemed like a setback to reveal the intended expansion of his borders. Abram would not be negatively impacted by Lot’s selfishness. He didn’t have to stick up for himself, or demand what he felt was rightly his. He simply trusted God. And God provided everything he would need to complete his divine assignment.

With that in mind, let us make every effort to put our trust in the one who is directing our steps. If we do that, our blessings will exceed what we could create for ourselves.

PRAYER: Father, I realize that my life is in your hands. Any advancement or promotion that comes to me must first pass through Your hands. I want nothing unless it has been arranged by You. Thank You for the many blessings that I enjoy because of You! Amen.
